WHO IS LUCIAN ZBARCEA?

The Story Behind the Music

I was always in love with traditional music in my own country and later, when discovering other countries traditional music I started to incorporate this new knowledge into my compositions. Today, my style is defined by using combinations of different traditional music elements with modern instrumental techniques and creating a general atmosphere that gives the impression of film music, even if the piece is intended for film or not.

Ever since I composed my first piece and saw it produced onstage back in 2001, I’ve been on a rollercoaster ride of music and creation. Before that, I had no idea that I could be a composer, but luckily my family directed me towards this career, and it was one of the best things that happened to me. Today, I am applauded for high energy pieces with close attention to movement and flow.

In parallel to my composition activity I also act as an educator for students in the University of Music in Bucharest where I teach the Gamelan Music of Indonesia on three different orchestras, two from Bali and one from Java. I am fortunate to have many students that attend my class and I am introducing them to the wonderful universe of Gamelan music, one that inspired so many musicians over the centuries.

I am the director and one of the main founders of the Jepun Bali Cultural Association that promotes the Balinese Culture in Romania. One of my main responsibilities is the Gamelan Orchestra that is part of this association, and I am leading it as well as teaching all our members the pieces that we perform.

Closely related to everything that I learned over the years, I work as a Musical Director (Tone Meister) in the Romanian National Radio Society where I collaborate with all the musicians that form the Radio Musical Ensembles (Symphonic and Chamber Orchestras, Choirs, Big-band and Traditional Orchestra). It is the dream job for any musician such as myself.

If you want to know me better, watch my performances and see what I do best by attending a performance of one of my compositions.
